From "backroom to boardroom"
spacer
spacer
We all just got back from another very informative, exciting, and fun xChange conference.
spacer
If I were to sum up the mood of the conference, it would be "time to be serious about release management." Every speaker had a story of renewed focus on ..., increased attention to ..., board level discussions about ..., searching for solutions for … enterprise-class release management.
spacer
For the Serena mainframe community at xChange, the story was the same but with an important twist. Customer after customer told me that they have seen increasing volumes and complexity of releases but that ChangeMan ZMF had met every challenge. Indeed, several customers said they were now considered to be heroes in their organization because they were equal to any challenge that came their way. "I've gone from backroom to boardroom," one said.
spacer
spacer
spacer
One project manager commented that they had implemented the Enterprise Release Option (ERO) of ZMF a decade ago and were now the envy of their colleagues because of the flexibility they had to manage releases.
spacer
The message from the conference was clear: today's release dependencies, from the mainframe-to-mobile, mean it is critical to have control, collaboration, and communication. That's what the conference demanded and that is what the conference demonstrated.
spacer

For more than 30 years, Serena has been the leader in enterprise mainframe solutions. From our very first product, COMPAREX, to the latest in cross-platform application development, The Client Pack, we have set the agenda for application development infrastructure solutions.

Organized for business
spacer
spacer
You may have noticed some pretty important changes going on at Serena. We recently revamped how we organize the company to bring more focus onto the core product areas.
spacer
Each product area is now led by a Product Officer with sole responsibility for how that product line is organized and operates.
spacer
The mainframe products are led by Kevin Parker, who is a 40-year industry veteran and has been with Serena for more than 15 years. You will know him as the voice of Serena in his Chief Evangelist role, leading blogger and futurist as well as the xChange Maestro.
spacer
If you have any questions, issues, or concerns, please e-mail Kevin directly at kparker@serena.com or call him at +1-650-481-3494 (Pacific Time).

High Level Language Exits for ChangeMan ZMF
spacer
spacer
The great thing about ChangeMan ZMF is the ease with which it can be customized. For the most part that customization can be done through the normal use of JCL, File Tailoring and Panel Definition Language because ChangeMan uses all standard IBM features. This makes it the easiest change and release management tool to implement and use.
spacer
However today’s developers are moving to Eclipse and other IDE’s on non-mainframe platforms even though they are still developing for the mainframe.
spacer
spacer
spacer
To make this possible Serena introduced plug-ins for the most common IDE’s. Check out the ChangeMan ZMF Client Pack at www.serena.com.
spacer
However the customizations aren’t accessed from these non-mainframe platforms.
spacer
With version 7.2 in full development now in the Serena R&D lab a new feature will be introduced called the High Level Language Exits (HLLX).
spacer
These exits will be invoked prior to and immediate after major functions in ChangeMan are invoked. For example before and after package create, before and after component checkout and so on.
spacer
And these exits will execute no matter where ChangeMan ZMF is being invoked from.
spacer
This means that customers can now write their business logic once, in the HLLX for the function they are using, and know that it will apply when the developer is using ChangeMan on the ISPF greenscreen, in Eclipse (or other IDE), when they are using the XML services, from Serena Business Manager workflows, in fact from everywhere ChangeMan ZMF functions are used.
spacer
The HLLX exits can be written in modern, high level languages such as COBOL, PLI and C or in REXX or even in Assembler.
spacer
Comprehensive debugging and reporting is built-in to the exits along with standardized data layouts for the information being passed to the exit and back to the calling routine.
spacer
To learn more write to: info@serena.com and ask about HLLX.

dotNew version of ChangeMan SSM's available now
spacer
spacer
"Our developers could not do their job without the support of ChangeMan ZMF and the Enterprise Release Option." Customer Advisory Board Member, September 2013
spacer
One of the most remarkable and versatile products in the mainframe portfolio has long been ChangeMan SSM. On October 3, the newest 8.4 release was made available.
spacer
ChangeMan SSMs ability to identify, track, report, and restore changes to data is unparalleled and makes SSM a critical tool in protecting system datasets at many enterprise organizations.
spacer
A number of major new features have been introduced in this new release, including support for z/OS 2.1 and the ability to download an SMP/E ready installer.
spacer
For systems programmers, a new Operational Integrity Feature has been added to automatically monitor essential system datasets.
spacer
The support for EAV and enhanced tracking of HRECALL (etc.) when real-time tracking occurs make this a very significant release indeed.

Migrate now: the chill wind is coming
spacer
spacer
Many customers recently received notice that their 30 and 40-year old mainframe source code repository software was no longer going to be supported by the vendor.
spacer
In order to help these customers Serena immediately set about creating an automated migration utility that can take an old repository and import it into ChangeMan ZMF in just a few seconds.
spacer
In fact it not only imports all the code but it imports the histories, the versions and the relationships too.
spacer
And it is fast. Recently, for a large telecommunications client, the utility migrated over 8,000 components in 0.27 cpu seconds.
spacer
But the most surprising thing about this utility is its ability to give you a “health check” on your repository. It finds missing components, duplicated components, junk components and reports all of this.
spacer
If you’d like to get a free health check on your inventory and see how easy it is to go from 1970’s version control to 21st century change and release management write to: info@serena.com

Special Report
spacer
spacer
xChange'13 was one of the most active and engaging customer events in Serena history. The focus this year was on Enterprise Release Management, and we were fortunate to secure two of the industry's leading thinkers on the subject. Serena CEO, Greg Hughes, set the tone of the conference by looking at where enterprise customers are and where they are trying to get to. He told several cautionary tales and you can see his complete keynote on YouTube at bit.ly/xChange13_DamonEdwards
spacer
Bringing his usual passion and entertaining style was George Spalding of Pink Elephant, who took a deep dive into the role of Release Management from an ITIL perspective and what we can learn from the best practices and disciplines of Service Transition. You can watch his presentation on YouTube at bit.ly/xChange13_GeorgeSpalding
spacer
Our second keynote was delivered by DevOps thinker and practitioner, Damon Edwards of DTO Solutions. As one of the leaders of the DevOps movement, Damon showed why bringing DevOps to the enterprise is critical for businesses today. His presentation is also on YouTube at bit.ly/xChange13tt_DamonEdwards
spacer
The mainframe track had 14 breakout sessions, and you can see some of the details and links to all of the materials below.

If you have never been to xChange, you are missing out on the most useful conference of the year.

spacer
xChange: where customers tell it like it is
spacer
spacer
Without doubt the most well attended sessions, and the most impactful, are the sessions delivered by customers. At this year's xChange, almost one-third of all sessions were customer led.
spacer
In the mainframe track, we heard from Prakash Balakrishnan of Nationwide, Michael Bailey of MetLife, as well as from several consultants embedded with Serena customers.
spacer
Prakash gave a very detailed and insightful account of how Nationwide Insurance has made maximum use of the new ChangeMan ZMF Client Pack to ensure that its developers stay under ZMF control while exploiting modern development platforms like Eclipse.
spacer
Michael, a veteran of xChange going back to 1996, used simple examples to show how the process of upgrading ZMF can be made easy and routine. He also gave some great examples of how to improve developer self-service by the addition of simple tags into the product.

dotA special welcome from our founder Doug Troxel
spacer
spacer
In June of 1980, I started Serena. Back then I had no idea just what it would become. Today, we are a thriving company delivering amazing and essential technology to almost all of the Fortune 100.
spacer
It is my honor to work with some of the best software engineers in the world. I still get that same excitement when my code compiles and runs as I did working on Comparex 33 years ago.
spacer
Today, my involvement in the day-to-day running of the company is a lot less than it was. However, I am still very actively involved working on special development projects and providing occasional design and technology leadership to the mainframe development teams.
spacer
spacer
It is always great to hear from customers that we continue to make a critical difference to them. Without Serena solutions, our customers could not pass their audits, could not control the change cycle, and release management would be a wild-west affair.
spacer
Do keep those stories coming. I really enjoy hearing from you.
spacer
Most of all, though, I would like to say a huge "thank you" for being a customer and for coming along on this journey with Serena.
spacer
The best is yet to come!
