Serena Narrows the Gap for Worldwide SCM Market ShareCompany Remains Among Top Three SCM Revenue Leaders According to Leading Market Intelligence FirmSan Mateo, CA – June 24, 2003 – SERENA Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SRNA), an industry-leading supplier of software that automates change to enterprise code and content, today announced the latest market share and revenue findings for the software configuration management (SCM) market as published by IDC. According to the study, Serena not only held its place among the top three SCM revenue leaders, but also gained significant ground on its nearest competitors over the 2001-2002 period. Serena's 2002 SCM revenue was nearly unchanged from 2001, while other revenue leaders experienced double-digit declines. "Because of the sluggish economy and uncertainty surrounding the geopolitical situation, many vendors saw considerable declines in SCM revenue in 2002," said Dick Heiman, a research director, Application Development and Deployment at IDC. "Serena's 2002 results are more than respectable and the company is well positioned as the SCM market returns to positive growth in the coming years." Despite difficult economic conditions, with the SCM tools market declining by 3% to $850 million and IT spending down in 2002, Serena remained in solid standing. IDC attributes this to several factors including Serena's strong reputation and brand recognition on the mainframe, as well as the company's integrated, full life-cycle Enterprise Change Management (ECM) strategy. Commenting on Serena's recent acquisition of TeamShare and its leading-edge issue and request management technology, IDC's Heiman states, "The addition of this functionality is a good complement to Serena's existing products." The acquisition enables Serena to provide comprehensive support throughout the application development life cycle and help customers more closely align business with IT by following a process-centric approach. In order to efficiently manage the "software complexity crisis" as reported by IDC, SCM products will also need to be flexible, customizable, easy to use, highly collaborative and must support the full application life cycle. Vendors that provide such solutions and are able to demonstrate ROI enterprise-wide will be best positioned for continued growth and success according to IDC. "We remain dedicated to executing our ECM vision with innovative technology and high quality solutions that meet customer needs," said Mark Woodward, President and Chief Executive Officer, SERENA Software, Inc. "Our ability to gain market share while others lost ground indicates that we understand the market and are moving in the right direction. Serena's corporate and product strategy resonates well with customers and prospects, and we will continue to build on this solid foundation."
